reading I

So these are all the books I read in the summertime. Bringing this lovely rug from Turkey is probably the best choice I've made in my life. It's super comfy to sit on and read, and also, this is my favorite reading place of my room during the whole summertime.

All books are in Chinese.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The Alchemist
Only Love Is Real: A Story of Soulmates Reunited

I didn't do much search before heading to Turkey because I was quite busy before going. I just randomly read two books about it. They're not even professional traveling guide books as Lonely Planet and this is one of them. If you're a backpacker seeking for some detail information, this is not the perfect book for you. But, if you're someone who wanna know inner aspects of Turkey, go read it! You can definitely know more about not only the traveling spots but also histories of them.

My favorite part of the book is about the food. Turkish cuisine as one of the three great cuisines in the world is one you can never miss out. Even though it's very different from Chinese cuisine, I was totally in love with it. As a gourmet, Hung, HsiuLuan does know about food. She really can specifically describe all the food I tried and I miss so much.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Before reading the original novel, I watched the film a couple of years ago. I was amazed at it, but not sure why, probably because the soundtracks, the cast or just Charlie himself. But I'm sure, it's not the feeling of going back to youth like most of people feel because I'm still bold and young. I'm still squandering my time and living dangerously. Well, I guess I love this book mainly because of the writing style of Stephen Chbosky. The novel consists of several letters written by Charlie to an anonymous friend. I'm always fond of anything about "letter" whether books or movies. They are just always attractive to me. For me, writing letters is a great way to interact with others and this is what I usually do with my friends.

I think the reason why this book has been so popular and even reached The New York Times Best Seller list due to the connection between readers and Charlie. Whoever read this book will feels like Charlie cuz they were, and we both were. We experienced exactly what Charlie had been going through, we understand his struggles with friendship, family and everything. And we're having a little secret in our minds which we carefully conceal and will never reveal. So then, when we see the movie, when we read the book, we feel like we know Charlie and Stephen Chbosky knows us.

The Alchemist

I've been depressed and even had problem falling asleep for a period of time then I started to read this book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It did help me a lot and made me feel much better just like what the person who gave this to me wishes for. Actually, I got it two years ago but never gotta chance to read until this summer, so after finishing reading, I was a bit regret meeting it so late. Then I thought of the word "Marktub" which keeps mentioned in the book. Marktub is a phrase in Arabic which means "It is written." or "It is fate." I keep wondering about this word and things about FATE and DESTINY and question that is everything in our life has already been written? If so, do we have chance to rewrite our own story?

The Alchemist is undoubtedly a book about dreams, but what if people without dreams? and what if they never know their destinies?

I still have a thousand thoughts and questions about this book and will write more about what I've learned from it and some of my personal opinions later.

Only Love Is Real: A Story of Soulmates Reunited

The soul of men is like to water;
From Heaven it cometh
To Heaven it riseth
And then returnth to earth,
Forever alternating.
- Goethe

Do you believe in soulmates or reincarnation? Well, I do. There are many books talking about the concept of immortal soul and how to find your soulmate, but this one is not the cliché like once you find your soulmate, you can live happily ever after. Dr. Weiss has different views and definition about the word "soulmate". Besides, he did not teach us to seek our soulmates, instead, telling us what to do after meeting them. Through the past-life regression therapy of Elizabeth and Pedro, Dr. Weiss taught us the highest wisdom of life which is also the main point of the book - LOVE. "When allowed to flow freely, love overcomes all obstacles." Let's make a self-examination, aren't we sometimes loving someone the way we want to? But is that correct? Is that the way they want?

In this book, I learned some basic information about hypnotherapy and if possible I would like to try out the past-life regression therapy because I'm way too curious about who was I in my past life and also want to cured the biggest fear in my mind. "So many of our fears are based in the past, not the future. Often the things we fear the most have already happened either in childhood or in a past life." This is what I learn from Dr. Weiss.

The book Quarter Turkey expresses exactly the same as my impression of Turkey, but in a even deeper way. I've been staying there for only two months, but the author, Zeren Wei spends quarter of her time exploring the country she both loves and hates. You can find many interesting facts about Turkey in this book. From what Turkish people eat to how they think and their everyday lifestyle. Reading this book made me feel like going back to Turkey again.  For those who has been to Turkey, you may probably feel the same way, and for those who haven't been there, you will definitely want to experience Turkey on your own.

I'm not a fan of  mystery novels, and nearly haven't read any of them. But this one changed my view. The reason why I choose this book was because of the theme. Just like The Perks of Being a Wallflower, this whole book is made up of a bunch of letters. Again, LETTERS, how can I miss this book? This is my first book of  Keigo Higashino, as I mentioned before, I don't like and read much mystery novels and I've never think that I would read any of his books or even like it. Surprisingly, I ended up liking it so much. The most marvelous thing about this book is that when I was reading, I felt how magical the connections between people and starting to think about everyone around me. Realizing that I could in some way affects people I don't know or will probably never know, I remind myself to act wisely and at the same time, cherishing every beautiful souls beside me.

These are just some of my personal opinions and if you have read any of them and feel like sharing your point of views with me, feel free to send me an email, or maybe a letter.
